ORIGIN STORY
This is day one. It’s a lonely day…with no subscriptions, no previous posts, and no audience. As it is likely the majority of readership will be property owners and real estate investors, it seems appropriate to start by asking you to think back to that first day you bought a property (or if you’re not a property owner, any major decision will do). Where was it and what were the circumstances? How confident were you and who helped you along the way? What was your vision? How much of it has been realized? How much has changed?
WE ALL SHARE A STORY that begins with calculated risk, initial execution, and blossoms into an investment plan. It is from that origin that we all arrive at our own principles, values, and priorities that guide our decision making and those differences are at the heart of a healthy competition. Those principles, values, and priorities are our roots. They’re not necessarily where we start but they’re born out of our initial experiences and they grow and adjust as we continue our journey. A successful investor stays true to his or her guiding principles and reevaluates that thinking along the way. I want to focus on and dive into that thinking and its evolution. And importantly, what begins as real estate driven thought will have parallels to (and from) success in other arenas. Pointing out and developing those parallels is the mission of this newsletter.
FIRST PRINCIPLE: PLAYING THE LONG GAME
Whether we’re talking about real estate investment or some other major decision you’ve made, there is nothing more important than playing the long game. Now more than ever, there is a competition for your attention. Instant gratification is targeted by advertising and social media like never before. We foolishly get pulled toward thinking comparatively and are led toward action bias (i.e. the market has never been this good…it’s time to sell, sell, sell!!!). In our modern world, survival takes on a new, faulty definition but our minds are still programmed to chase those dopamine hits. So…anyone looking to succeed (in anything really) needs to be dedicated to the first principle of PLAYING THE LONG GAME.
This idea will come up time and time again and it should be the seed for your ORIGIN STORY. If it’s not then it’s tough to call what you’re doing “investment”. Short term opportunities are going to arise and you want a well-practiced long term lens to best analyze the pros and cons. Thinking long term will always anchor your thinking and protect you from being rash and falling for hedonistic temptations. Unlike the heavyweight fighter who goes for the knockout blow prematurely, we can all stay on our feet if we’re focused on all 15 rounds.
MY LONG TERM PLAN
It’s my goal to help develop these first principles to help bring more and more success to real estate investors. I work in brand operations for a franchising property management company and it is our collective mission to redefine and reinvent the world of real estate investment. As it stands, the average professional doesn’t think twice when asked about investing in their 401Ks or 403Bs but the world of real estate is still so foreign and intimidating for most. Nexus is focused on how to decrease the barriers to entry and better inform the masses of the opportunities that exist. Additionally, our team is driven to create and execute superior services that decrease risk and create a reliable and attractive investment opportunity for as many people as a given market can support. This written space is an extension of those goals.
And my angle is this:
you are already good at something…it’s unlikely you’d be in a position to invest if you weren’t…let’s look at the principles, values, and practices that have brought success for so many, in whatever it is they do, and show how those same approaches can lead to similar results in the real estate investment world.
