It’s a week into January and maybe I was living under a rock or have too successfully blocked out much of the noise that’s out there in the world; whatever the reason, not one person asked about or told me about their New Year’s Resolution for 2023. Surely it’s not because 2022 went so swimmingly for everyone? There seemed to be more of a ‘good riddance’ vibe but so little discussion of how to make 2023 better.
I’ve always liked the Resolution tradition, despite it’s hokeyness and high failure rate. Maybe it’s because I’d worked in a gym for a couple years and enjoyed watching the place swell for a month while predicting who’d stick around and for how long? Or perhaps growing up and spending much of my life playing sports, it kinda seems like the start of a new season. Whatever it is…I like it…and missed it this year.
So if there’s not as much love for setting a goal for the year I’m hoping people can find the time to at least look backwards and dissect what they were successful and unsuccessful with in the past trip around the sun. We’re not growing if we’re standing still and we’re standing still if we’re not taking the time to reflect. Whether it be job performance related, investment related, or something pertaining to relationships, just taking the time to think about past decisions will help kickstart some ideas for a successful 2023.
I say this as I write for the first time since last summer. In the spirit of putting the money where the mouth is, this little blog got off to a nice little start…and then the summer schedule hit full-tilt and I unplugged…a big fat failure. But written language is how we (or at least I) best process our thoughts and it’s a helpful way to capture so much of what flies around between the ears before it disappears or loses it’s relevant value.
In that spirit, let’s kick this off again. New Year’s Resolution style…time to recapture those thoughts that were mere seeds a couple months ago. Hope you’re down to both revisit your year by looking back (history teacher style) and/or following along as I restart the engine.
Happy 2023.
p.s. I’d love to hear about your Resolutions or relevant thoughts here if you’re so inclined to share.
